Description
This adapter simply plugs into the mouse or joystick port of your Amiga, and off you go. It works just like a conventional Amiga mouse or joystick: use the slider on your CDTV infrared remote control to switch between mouse and joystick. In addition, two LEDs show power and infrared signal reception. Best of all, it is plug and play, so you need no software drivers.
Power Supply
The adapter draws its power directly from your Amiga (approx. 15 mA; according to Commodore, the joystick port delivers up to 100 mA), so you do not need an external power supply unit.
Range and Delay
In my tests, the range reached up to 8 m. However, harsh daylight can impair the function, because daylight has a high infrared component.
The CDTV remote control has a delay of 60-80 ms between individual keystrokes. The adapter itself adds no significant delay, so it transmits 12-16 keystrokes per second. In fact, the original CDTV works with the same intervals.
Demonstration
The following YouTube videos show the adapter in action. In the videos, I hold the remote control close to the receiver to show that it is a CDTV remote control; as mentioned above, the range reaches up to 8 m. The videos show the previous, larger version of the adapter. By contrast, the new version is smaller and has exactly the same functionality, plus two LEDs.
Important Note
Commodore designed the CDTV remote control primarily for single use. All controllers work on the same infrared frequency and have no multiplexing technology. You therefore cannot use several controllers in the same room at the same time, because their signals interfere with each other.
Housing
The housing consists of ABS plastic and comes in white, beige, grey and black. On request, other colours are also possible.
Compatibility
- A500, A1200, A1000, A2000, A3000(T), A4000(T)
- A600: problematic for mechanical reasons; I therefore recommend an extension cable.
